Affirmations can be used to increase positivity in your life, help you heal, help manifest change in your life, create abundance and generally make you feel better about yourself, your situation and your relationship with others. Use them as a guide and if they don’t resonate with you, swap out the words to find a phrase that is perfect. It’s not just me that has experienced a profound change as a result of my affiliation with Voices. While it seems new-agey (and Wikipedia files it under New Age), affirmations are really just simple positive thinking. If you hear or tell yourself every day that you are ugly, not good enough, fat, etc., that negatively slowly chips away at you. To be effective, affirmations must be positive, specific, in the present tense and a relevant to your life. Use it as a mantra during meditation, write it on your hand to look at all day, write it on a piece of paper and carry it in your pocket or write it on a post-it and stick it to your mirror, computer or steering wheel. Sometimes we don’t think positively on our own and affirmations help remind us to be positive. Whatever you do with the affirmation and how you use it is up to you, but repeating it often and with excitement is key. The Inmates are lead by Curt Tofteland, who has been working with Luther Luckett inmates since the mid-1990s.
But it is the humanity that this work has taught me that keeps me from falling into a dark place. Yes, its fun to go to flashy musicals and act in rom-com movies but what we do also serves a much higher purpose. One of the inmates who is involved with the program came to their aid fracturing his hand and breaking his middle finger in the process.
All net proceeds support the summer playwriting program at Northpoint, and seed the third annual residency for a professional playwright to teach master classes to the prisoner-playwrights there in June 2013. Speaking positively, and often, gradually changes the way we think, the way we behave and the way we treat ourselves and others. The inmate’s stories, including their crimes, are interwoven with the plot of Shakespeare’s The Tempest as the inmates delve deeply into the characters they portray while confronting their personal demons.
It lets us connect with one another and to let our shared stories heal the wounds this life can give us.
And sometimes negative stuff happens in life, but what if we could make more good stuff happen?
It lets us know we are not alone and that deep down, whether we are incarcerated in Kentucky or trying to battle the challenges of living in NYC, we are all the same.


If the affirmation is about abundance, feel what it feels like to have that thing or idea, touch it, smell it, sense it, use it, enjoy it and see how you feel in its presence.
And even though affirmations aren’t meant to help you collect material things, sometimes these things are valid, like owning your own home or paying off student debts or getting a reliable car. The sheer number of affirmations to change your life is limitless, depending on what you desire in your heart of hearts.
I can’t think of any population that can use transformation or redemption more than incarcerated prisoners.
It’s not that I don’t find their crimes horrifying or I feel the need to justify the “bad” things people do, it’s that I recognize that we are all humans and all of us that the power to do just as much good as bad.
No human should be left behind in this, regardless of how “monstrous” one may think they are. I can’t remember where but someone once said, “those who need grace the most often deserve it the least.” This has always touched me deeply.
He believes in seeing these men for who they are today, not for who they were, and not defining them solely by the crime they have committed.
