Our world often portrays singleness as a condition of loneliness, doomed to the unfortunate.
At one point in my life, “singleness” clouded my true identity with thoughts like…“since I’m not in a relationship, something must be wrong with me.” I allowed my relationship status to determine my value and worth. We, as Christian girls, are constantly reminded through music, movies, tv shows, commercials holidays and even our friends that we are missing out. We then chase this dream of happiness to the point that we are willing to compromise or settle.
Over the years I have learned that anything good can turn into an idol if our desire for that thing takes the place of God. We’ll be disappointed because our relationship won’t bring us the fulfillment we desperately thought it would. And if we are too desperate to wait (like I once was), we will enter something that He never ordained.
Something that clicked last week is that I need to surrender everything to Him on a daily basis. Does anyone know of some verses about doing everything for God’s glory and making him the most important part of your life? My goal as a older teen was actually not primarily marriage–though that was a dream too. In this first episode of the Phantom Screens Southern Romance Project, company CEO Esther de Wolde, goes house hunting in Mobile Alabama where she finds and buys a 1906 home in the Oakleigh Garden Historic District with the help of Realtor Chris King and home improvement expert Danny Lipford.
You may well be wondering, “What in the world is a Canadian doing in Alabama anyways?” Truth is, I fell in love with the South many years ago—more years ago than I care to remember.
Esther de Wolde: It all started with just the crazy desire, passion, whatever you want to call it, to one day restore a home. And so it’s one of those things when you have an item on your bucket list, and I guess you just keep dreaming about it. Esther de Wolde: That first day when we went out and started looking at houses, we had lined up, I think it was six houses to come see. And so when we began looking at these houses, some of the exteriors matched just perfectly—just love them—and then you’d go inside and you’d find out, oh, it only has a eight-foot ceiling. Danny Lipford: Well, you wanted a nice Southern feel to a home, let’s check out the porch up here. Chris King: All right, as I told you, Esther, this was built in the early 1900s, and this is pretty close to original. Danny Lipford: Well, this is a good feel, though, I mean the original, this has to be the original molding included.
Chris King: You notice the transoms throughout the hallway for central hall for creating air flow.
And as we’re going through all the legal documents, suddenly thunder starts outside and lightning, and it begins to rain. It turned out to be this jovial afternoon in this lawyer’s office and one of those where you emerged from it and went, did that really just happen? Danny Lipford: Well, I’ll tell you what, the weather’s a lot different than it is in Vancouver.

As for the Keisuke Kanda shop itself, the hue of the clothes were whites, creams and pastels.

So here we have a huge display with the guardians wearing the paper aprons they were selling for about $15 a pop. While Yosenex and I were milling about the collection, we met a young Japanese woman who spoke some English.
To find all this, Yosenex just kept asking the store clerks where we could find Sailor Moon figures, books, artbooks, etc.
And speaking of Kyoto, I was able to wander Shinkyogoku, a shopping arcade in downtown Kyoto. Keiko Kitagawa aka PGSM Sailor Mars! There was also a poster for the new live action Space Pirate Captain Harlock movie. Finding love is like finding shoes ….People look for Good Looking, Smart Ones …But somehow they end up with ones they feel comfortable with. We consequently develop an unhealthy desire to be in a relationship because of what we see and what we hear. I couldn’t trust God for 10 years with a desire I claimed He gave me because I idolized the idea of a relationship. I had this same struggle for years, and after a brief unwise relationship ended, I finally got back on track and found myself completely focused on God. I find that even though I’m not even graduated I can let the dream of a relationship someday take over.
For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish. Our dreams, no matter how godly, can never and will never take the place of the God-shaped hole in our souls.
It was bucket list item number 67: to take a neglected Southern home and restore it to its former glory. I wanted the sidewalk, and then a strip of lawn, and lined with these gorgeous oak trees that drape over the street.
And I had a wish list ahead of time—it had to have two stories, a beautiful yard or at least potential of a yard for gardening for sure. And I know you originally said you wanted the history—that you would like to find as close to the original owner as you can—and this has been in their family since I think the 20s. It’s funny, as simplistic as this house is, then you have some decorative elements, like the corbels up there.
It kind of has more of an, I don’t know, an upper scale look to it than you would think from the outside, because you would think these trim would be all smooth. And we’re from Vancouver of all things, where the rain rains; but I don’t know the last time I’ve ever heard rain pound that hard on a roof. First of all I just bought a house in Mobile, Alabama, and met the lawyer from the Andy Griffith show. Our first goal was to visit every Book Off (a used book store) we ran into and spend at least 5 minutes there. But thanks to Yosenex’s Japanese skills and the really nice lady behind the make up counter, we found it!
I passed by the movie theater I used to go to when I wanted to escape Japan and feel like I was home in America.
But if I surrender to Him and lay everything I have at His feet every morning, I hope my life will begin to reflect that.

What a great reminder that God has a dream for us far greater than the dreams we come up with ourselves. Until Christ comes first, we will never be able to have a God honoring relationship with a man.
I’m one of the people who founded our company 20-odd years ago in Abbotsford, British Columbia in Canada. To make a long story short, I reached out to my friend and corporate spokesperson, Danny Lipford, to see if I could make this dream come true.
And you keep saying you want something from the deep South and a diamond in the rough, 257 Rapier might be it. I don’t know, when you walk up to a house—especially a Southern home—you want to feel welcome. When found our first one in Shinjuku where Yosenex taught me how to find Sailor Moon manga properly. If they were selling a bag that featured the manga images and was made from a sturdier material, I would have handed over my first born for it. If we can’t learn to be content in our relationship with God and accept that He alone is enough, then we will never be truly happy. Godly interpersonal relationships flow OUT of a healthy and vibrant relationship with Christ.
My relationship with Christ deepened as I realized the Lord was closing that door, and I had to learn to place His will first, before my dreams.
There probably, if you decide to buy the house and depending on what you want to do on renovation, there’s bound to be a place where we can get a few of the original boards out of some of the other areas, lace them in here. And of course we’re making jokes about who’s going to get struck by lightning for saying the wrong thing.
Isetan is a high end department store that reminds me a lot of the Macy’s at 34th street in NYC. I almost wonder if he designed the new princess dresses in the musical–the aesthetic seems very similar. If any of you bought these and put together a bangin’ outfit, please email me pics or leave it in the comments.
I nearly cried on the shinkansen (bullet train) as I looked at the books on my way to Kyoto.
And a relationship with Christ can only be healthy and vibrant if it comes first–before any dream, and before any goal. I’m currently stuck at home, with medical issues keeping me from going to college and even finishing high school.
I wasn’t aware of this, but Yosenex told me that these volumes (except the first one) had small posters inside.
I might cave and if anyone sells them, I just might end up paying an arm and a leg for them! I have such a desire to go to college and enter the medical field, that I think its actually hurting my relationship with God. I made it into an idol, instead of surrendering to Him and patiently waiting for His timing.
