Still, humor is an important communication tool and an essential discipline for any writer to learn. But if you’re like me, and things like humor and satire are difficult for you, then you may need some help. But if your aim is to move people, to create an emotional connection, then you have no choice.
Hopefully, this article will help you find your own way to entertain and engage audiences, to give your message the best chance at success by getting people to lower their guards. I’ve found it easy to resort to humour in situations where I realise that my intellect, or abilities are lacking.
But if it comes easily to you, and it does for me, it can inject unexpected life to your writing for sure. In England there is a woman who has called off her wedding to save money for her pet lizard’s chemo (which took 200 mile trips to get). I hope her fiance sees the great opportunity here for some deep contemplation of his future. When you get up in the morning and are dressing to do the gardening I would gently like to suggest that you think.
Fun for the sake of fun is OK, but it’s great tool to use to get people to lower their resistance to your ideas, or to get them to relax and let go of their fears. Jeff, I found your site via Dan Blank, and as a long-time humorist (3 award-winning humor books and hundreds of columns) I wanted to offer a short, free downloadable report about adding humor to public speaking.

Although humor writing can certainly be developed (I sure hope so since I just plunked down a few hundred bucks to attend the Erma Bomback conference), I think it’s like singing in the sense that you have to be born with a certain amount of natural talent for it. Don’t Miss a Thing!Every week, I write new articles on writing, ideas, and making a difference. You may need some convincing as to why you shouldn’t stop trying to be funny, altogether.
He distracted my guardian angel with green beer causing me to flay my finger while attempting to pit an avocado. I think my best way of using humor is creating ridiculous similes, though sarcasm is a good method as well.
As a comedian and motivational speaker, other speakers are always coming to me to teach them how to be funny. I know I’m not a humor writer, and if I happen to write something that makes people laugh, then great.
The internet is a blessing for me because I can let the inner comedian and clown in me come out and play at the forums.
I think one should be cognizant of the incredible power of humor, using it to its fullest advantage, but also seizing the stoic and dramatic moments. This blog is where I share my best work and test out ideas before they make it into my books. Each week, I send out a newsletter with free tips on writing and creativity.Start Building Your Audience TodayDownload my free eBook and learn exactly what I did to grow my blog from zero to 100,000 readers in 18 months.

I think this is a daunting task, and I try to make it easier on them by telling them not to focus on funny, but FUN. Or they are thinking about something else that was funny at just the time when I’m speaking.
Have mercy on those of us who are out walking before we’ve had the time to have breakfast or a fortifiying cup of tea. Snarky is easy, but funny, lol funny, is mostly a spontaneous reaction to something unexpected. I usually only believe what I tell myself but now I’m starting to believe what other people say as well now, but if more than one person see it then it has to be true.
Comedy relies so much on timing, and you can’t control the timing when someone else is reading your words. You can just influence the timing with the 3-period pause thing (you know, dot dot dot?) and good use of paragraph breaks.
I could use a video shot at the parking lot of a local beach of a man with a huge F-150 pick up truck dumping out two garbage bags full of beer cans and repeatedly and very intentionally running over them to crush them, assuming he’s doing it for money.
