Are you looking for a way to release the everyday stress and tension?Would you or someone you know like to try meditating? The stages of the mind.
Meditation no longer belongs solely to the worlds of pseudo-science and spirituality, but has now been embraced by modern science as well. Meditation has been extensively tested in laboratories around the world and is proven to help heal the body and mind of illnesses and disorders.
Eric Harrison, Australian meditation teacher and founder of The Perth Meditation Centre, claims to have received around a quarter of his 15,000-plus clients as referrals from the medical profession.
Another respected Australian meditation teacher, Dr Ian Gawler, who used meditation to defeat a diagnosed terminal cancer, also cites the Relaxation Response as being a powerful tool for self-healing (we’ll look at exactly what the Relaxation Response is later in these articles). Practitioners of meditation believe this springs from the average person’s inability to disconnect from the stress of past events or perceived future threats. In short – we are a society of perpetual ‘worry warts’, and many people fail to recognize this as fact, or indeed simply lack the skills to do anything about it. In the second post in this three-part series we will look at what the Relaxation Response is, how your body reacts to stress and why it’s bad for you.
Seamus Anthony is a musician, writer and entrepreneur who lives in the beautiful Dandenong Ranges, near Melbourne, Australia.
Finally, I learned the proper way to breathe in order to relax your body and stretch properly. Fasting is another growing area where the Western world is finally catching up to the rest of the world in realizing the amazing healing benefits of it — not to mention it’s a safe way to lose a lot of weight and keep it off if you retrain your thoughts about food during the fast by, you guessed it!, meditation! And in a reciprocal way, it is amazing how a lighter, healthier diet (and less booze) makes for a much easier, cleaner meditation experience.
Excellent post on a topic I am fascinated by since discovering mantra meditation has enhanced my life but I have so many questions in my mind about meditation. Does anyone know if there are types of meditation that are classified as more beneficial, or does it not matter? In my opinion most kinds of meditation are beneficial, as to which degree they benefit you personally is something you’d need to test. Ahh, an interesting subject that I, as a recovering alcoholic, don’t think I could survive without. I just decided to look for a meditation class to help me jump start my meditation practice.
Today most people complain about not being able to concentrate to actually start with the meditation. Mention meditation and many people would associate it with monks chanting in temples or ascetics who have given up all luxuries for a lifetime of deep contemplation in the mountains.
That may be true in the past, but today, meditation is practiced by people from all walks of life.
The ever changing landscape of business often leaves many of us shocked, confused or disillusioned.
When we slide into panic mode trying to stop falling sales or to regain market share, what we can only see is the problems that we’re confronting, and not the potentials that have been lying outside the boundaries of our mind all along. I hope you find this meditation useful in helping you to tackle your business challenges with a clearer and sharper mind. Wee Peng Ho conducts mindfulness-based business transformation training as well as stress reduction classes for companies and organizations.
I’m going to have to tweak this a little, and use some of the tips you provided while blogging. Ah yes… There is only one way to make a rational decision and that is with a clear mind.
As for generating new ideas, this meditation aims to help you break away from old thinking patterns and see the task on hand from a different perspective. The importance thing to note when it comes to meditation is not to stress over it, and be patient with yourself. Are you looking for a way to release the everyday stress and tension?Would you or someone you know like to try meditating? The stages of the mind. The thought of transforming yourself into a better person can be daunting – especially if you’re older, and you’ve had several “interventions,” and you do not feel as energetic as you were when you were a fresh-faced (or pimply-faced, as the case may be) teenager. You know that there are some activities you engage in that are bad for you (such as smoking or binge-drinking), and that there are some people who bring out the worst in you (toxic frenemies, the gossip girl, the enabler buddy) – now is the time to let go of them.
A surefire way to be happy is to fall in love and be passionate about something – or somebody.

If you have any kind of health complaint at all then meditation can help you to get better. If you are in good shape and want to stay this way, then regular meditation is a good idea. A recent survey of General Practitioners found that up to 80% of doctors had referred patients to practitioners of the three most popular Complementary Therapies – which included meditation, along with acupuncture and hypnosis. As a result, more and more people are turning to meditation as a simple, cheap, and effective method of self-therapy. Key to this is the fact that meditation helps lower blood pressure and strengthens the immune system.
In his book ‘How Meditation Heals the Body and Mind’ (1999, Perth Meditation Center), Harrison claims that an even wider array of ailments can be managed with meditation. His work promoting meditation as therapy for cancer and other illnesses earned him an Order of Australia Medal. Whilst walking down the street, a person may not be doing anything stressful in that moment but may nonetheless be highly agitated due to the tendency of the mind to constantly mull over past or future problems. Even those who would not be described as ‘highly agitated’ or ‘chronically stressed’ are often still afflicted by a subtle level of tension which inhibits the mind from switching back into the Relaxation Response. Even low-tech hippies like me still compulsively check work emails “just quickly” before dinner and get interrupted on weekends by work related calls. While longer does not mean better for me personally I enjoy meditating for an hour most times. There is no problem with either in my opinion, just never believe any teacher who says their way is the only way to meditate.
I find meditation very helpful for my fertility patients and find that they are usually able to relax on the treatment table longer if they’re listening to a meditation. Daily meditation and regular acupuncture treatments are key to staying healthy and stress free.
Men and women, spiritual or otherwise, are learning meditation to improve their responses to life’s challenges. Responding out of these non-productive states of mind usually result in mindless reactions that not only fail to meet long-term business goals, but may even jeopardize the life span of a company. Working by improving your inner landscape, meditation helps you to respond to external events with more awareness and clarity, and hence, change the business results that you deliver over time. It’s no wonder then that the results that we produced out of such self-limiting states are uncreative, mediocre and unsatisfactory. Here is one meditation technique you can practice to shift yourself to a more open and empowering state. There are many different techniques available and choose the one that is most comfortable for you.
But I find that the harder we try to control or stop distractions, the more distracted we become. We can be so used to seeing things our way that we fail to realize that not everyone shares the same view as us.
I hope this meditation will help you to bring about some positive effects for your business. It could be a subject you’ve always been interested in but has nothing to do with your work or your daily information-gathering. Surround yourself with people who bring out the good in you, or who, like you, are seeking to improve themselves via healthful action. Either way, making someone happy is the surest way to feel good about yourself, to feel you’ve made a difference. But it should be noted that even those in unlikely positions are also given the opportunity to save a life – the passerby who pulled a youngster out of harm’s way, or the friend who refused to let her drunken companion drive, or the kid who adopted a stray cat or dog. It is effective both as means to prevent disease, and as a means to cure, manage or slow the effects of existing conditions.
He suggests that by initiating the popularly cited ‘Relaxation Response’, the body is able to ward off or effectively slow and manage the effects of not just high blood pressure, but insomnia, fatigue, headaches, gastro-intestinal problems, infertility, sexual problems, and anxiety attacks.

This occurs even though none of these problems may have anything to do with walking down the street. This might be part-and-parcel of an interesting and otherwise rewarding career, but nevertheless it takes its toll on our ability to deeply relax. I don’t necessarily sit Indian style and hum, but it definitely has become part of my life. There were periods where I meditated for an hour twice a day and felt it was very beneficial. I recognize the value and look forward to the day when meditating is part of my daily practice. And the saddest part is, many people are not aware of their limiting mental states and go on to reproduce the same mediocre results again and again.
Settle down comfortably in a quiet place where you won’t be disturbed for the duration of this meditation. As you breathe in, say silently to yourself “I am…”, and as you breathe out, followed by “relaxed”. You’ll inevitably find your mind drifting to other thoughts as you meditate, instead of focusing on your breathing and repeating the given phrase. Continue focusing on your breathing and silently repeating the phrase for the next ten minutes. At the end of ten minutes, bring your attention to one business issue you’re trying to gain deeper insights on. Examine the question from a beginner’s mind, as if this is the first time someone has asked you about it. The first is concentrating (managing distractions), and the second is getting new ideas, which is similar to bringing business issues to mind. In terms of business, one of the most important things meditation will bring you is inner peace.
It helps us to stay focused and to channel that life force to create answers to the problems we face. Even if you take it a day at a time, you will find that the opportunities to become better than you are, right now, are actually, right there. Attempt a home project – something you can do over the weekend – that will clearly improve your home. It doesn’t have to be dangerous (like skydiving) but it has to be something you know will be hard for you to do, but will also be good for you (like public speaking).
Exercising will not only make you healthier and stronger, it will make you look good, and you will also feel good. If you want to battle depression, anxiety, sleep disorder, and personality issues, meditation is one effective remedy. There are only so many years in a lifetime, and it would be nice to spend some of it with people or a significant person whom you love. It could be as simple as finding a way to compliment someone every day, or doing someone a favor for the week, or orchestrating something major that you know you can do, with some effort, and you know will be most appreciated. Furthermore, Time went on to say that “it’s becoming increasingly hard to avoid meditation. It is used as treatment for “heart conditions, AIDS, cancer, and infertility … depression, hyperactivity, and Attention Deficit Disorder” (Time).
If you are always contactable, then you are never really “switched-off”, and yet, as you will see in my next two articles, this is a vital requirement in the quest for good health. In fact over at Rebel Zen we are about to release an e-book on just this topic so please check out this article then join our mailing list to find out more. Draw out the word “relaxed” during your entire exhaled breath so that it becomes “relaxxxxxxxxed”. Formulate it as a question, for instance, “How can I improve the sales of XYZ product?” Gentle rest your attention on the selected question.
Every new milestone is a beginning: take stock and give yourself a pat on the back for what you’ve accomplished so far. Complete your shopping and chores early, and get instant gratification for a job well done.
There are only so many waking hours of the day, so do something that you love and that makes you happy.
Just bring your attention back to where it should be every time you catch yourself losing focus. I think I can remember a quote from the Buddha saying that the bliss from spiritual practice is a good thing. How would your responses change if you’re seeing the problem not as who you are, but from the perspectives of your stakeholders?
