Will Windows Server 2008 Security Performance be lagged far behind by that of Windows Server 2012?
The extension support for Windows Server 2008, the old but still popular operating system, is in order to give IT pros some breathing room so that they can prepare for Windows Server 2012. However, the most important reason, I think, lies in the unpredictability of security performance in Windows Server 2012.
Windows Server 2012, as the successor of Windows Server 2008, has been made many changes in order to make the system safer.
Windows Password Recovery Solutions is proudly powered by WordPressEntries (RSS) and Comments (RSS). This chapter of Xen Virtualization Essentials will cover in detail the steps necessary to install and run Windows Server 2008 as a virtualized Xen guest. Since Windows Server 2008 falls into the Xen category of an unmodified operating system (in other words an operating system that has not been altered specifically to run on the Xen hypervisor) paravirtualization is not an option.
This chapter assumes that the Xen host system is running a Xen enabled kernel and that the standard Xen tools (specifically xm) are also installed.
If neither of the above commands produce output then it is likely these features are unavailable and that your hardware is unable to run Xen HVM guests. In order to install Windows Server 2008 as a Xen HVM guest the second requirement is the operating system installation media. Obviously, the Windows Server 2008 guest system will need disk space into which it can install itself and subsequently execute. The next step involves the creation of a domainU configuration file suitable for installing Windows Server 2008 as a Xen guest. The above example assumes that Windows Server 2008 is going to be installed into a disk image and that the installation media is an ISO image file. A number of the configuration settings shown in the above example are to enable a graphical console for our Windows Server 2008 guest operating system. Both SDL and VNC work very well in terms of displaying Windows in a graphical console, although VNC has some distinct advantages over SDL. By default Xen does not automatically start the VNC console when the domainU guest starts up. A number of other configuration options are available to modify the guest environment but the above settings are the minimal settings recommended to run a Windows guest with Xen.
After a few seconds the VNC or SDL console (depending on the configuration settings) will appear and the Windows installation process will begin. In this review of Windows Server 2008, we take a look at the features and benefits of Microsoft’s newest and most advanced server Operating System.
Today I downloaded the recently released Windows Server 2008 release candidate 0 (RC0) evaluation. Microsoft says that Windows Server 2008 is the “most advanced and secure server operating system” that they have ever released.
The first thing that new Server 2008 users will notice is the new look and feel of Windows Server 2008. For example, one of the first things I noticed is that the Run command was missing from the Start Menu. As Microsoft says that Windows Server 2008 is the “most secure” server OS they have every created, I want to take a minute to touch on the security features of Server 2008.
Active Directory Federation Service – allows administrators to easily set up trust relationships with federation partners. Read-Only Domain Controllers - these domain controllers will be used in environments where you need a domain controller but you cannot guarantee the physical security of the server.
Server Core Installation - a new type of install of Windows Server 2008 that will allow you to only install the typical Windows network infrastructure services – DHCP, DNS, file sharing, and domain controller functions.
Password and account lockout policy improvements – offers the ability to have multiple password and account policies in a single domain. Windows BitLocker Drive Encryption - allows you to encrypt all of the hard drives on a server.
You can view more Windows Server 2008 features and benefits at the Server 2008 Product Overview. We have to keep in mind that there are so many other applications included in the Windows Server 2008 OS. Windows Deployment Service (WDS) is a new Server 2008 feature that allows you to deploy Windows client machines over the network.
ScheduleCast is a scheduled deployment whereas AutoCast is an “always available” deployment using Multicast. Microsoft’s Network Access Protection (NAP) is a new policy that can be put into place, requiring clients to meet certain requirements before they can connect to a Windows 2008 server. If they do not meet the requirements that are set, the client can be quarantined or can be denied access. By using NAP, you can secure not only local PCs but also home computers or roaming computers that attempt to connect to your network from your LAN or via the Internet with a VPN.
RemoteApp - similar to published applications in Citrix, RemoteApp will allow you to share an application with a workstation instead of the entire Windows desktop.

Terminal Services Gateway - allows remote users who are working away from the office to connect to terminal services. Terminal Services Web Access – offers the ability for remote users to connect to terminal services with just a web browser. Windows Server 2008 Server Manager is a new console that will put all the snap-ins you need to manage your server in a single place, making it easier and faster to for administrators to manage Windows 2008 Servers.
Windows Server Virtualization is a new feature that allows you to virtualize any operating system onto one server. With this feature, Microsoft is hoping to take away a great deal of the virtualization marketplace from VMware.
As we are just now getting a look at Microsoft’s version of Hypervisor virtualization in the recently released Windows Server 2008 RC0, it is too soon to say how good of a virtualization feature set Microsoft will offer. Join us as we kick off our new series of expert interviews with IT insiders and tech gurus conducted by MVP Mitch Tulloch. Our first interview series is with Johan Arwidmark Microsoft MVP Cloud and Data Center Management, and Mikael Nystrom Microsoft MVP Cloud and Data Center Management. What changes will you need to make to your deployment infrastructure as new versions of Windows 10 are released by Microsoft? TechGenix Ltd is an online media company which sets the standard for providing free high quality technical content to IT professionals. The Server Core installation option is a new option that you can use for installing Windows Server 2008. Meanwhile, Microsoft also announces that they will extend Windows Server 2008 support for 18 months.
The new server will probably take a year or more to test and perhaps two or more years to adjust its related applications. As we all know, Windows Server 2008 has been generally regarded as one of the safest operation systems. Firstly, we can see that, just as in Windows 8, Windows Server 2012 uses Early Launch Anti-Malware to prevent unknown drivers to load on boot by default.
The best way, therefore, to virtualize Windows Server 2008 using Xen is to configure it as a Hardware Virtual Machine (HVM) guest.
In addition, hardware virtualization requires that the host system hardware include either Intel-VT or AMD-V virtualization support. It is also possible that the host CPU supports one of these features, but that the functionality is disabled by default in the system BIOS. This space can take the form of either a physical disk drive connected to the host system or a disk image file. Xen provides a choice of VNC or SDL for supporting a graphical console when the guest is running. Firstly, VNC provides greater flexibility than SDL in terms of remote access to the domainU graphical console.
In order to have the graphical console spawned automatically, the vncconsole = 1 setting is included. While that is a tall order to stand up to, I do believe that Windows Server 2008 has many new features included that system administrators of small and large companies will enjoy. If fact, if you have used Windows Vista, you will notice how similar it is to Windows Server 2008. As Windows system admins, we are used to going to the same place, over and over, to accomplish the same task.
Now you just have to click on the Start Search area of the Start Menu and type in the command that you need. These are just some of things that you will need get used to when using Windows Server 2008.
What is a big change for most admins is that if you choose to use the “server core” installation, there will be no local GUI interface to the OS. Because AutoCast uses Multicast, you can save on bandwidth by all clients sharing the same streaming data over the network. Even better, if the computer does not meet the requirements, the Windows 2008 Server can deploy the necessary updates that are needed.
It is supposed to have seamless integration with the client PCs so that clients will just see an icon in their start menu or desktop and click on it to run the application. By using this, remote PCs attempting to connect to terminal services do not need to have the remote desktop client or VPN.

While Microsoft certainly lags far behind VMware in the maturing of their virtualization offerings, by Microsoft offering virtualization already built into the Windows OS, they are going a long way to getting their version of virtualization in the hands of the end user. There will be some people who like the fresh look of Windows Server 2008 and there will be people who don’t care for it. He holds several certifications including VCP5, VCAP-DCA, CCIE #9369, and has been awarded the VMware vExpert award 5 years running. It is indeed welcome news to IT pros who haven’t decided to upgrade to Windows Server 2012 for at least a year. Application compatibility is an important reason why the upgrade of Windows Server this time takes so long a time. And we can see it is especially welcome by many enterprises considering its powerful security performance. And Secure Boot is also used to avoid boot code running unless it’s digitally signed so that it is more difficult for malicious code to run at boot time when compared to that in Windows Server 2008. For information about the differences between paravirtualization, hardware virtualization and full virtualization read the chapter entitled An Overview of Virtualization Techniques. To verify this, access the host system’s BIOS configuration menu during the boot process and look for an option related to virtualization support. Installation may be performed directly from the DVD, or the contents of the DVD may be copied to an ISO image file on the host system. With VNC it is possible to connect to the graphical console from other systems, either on the local network or even over the internet.
I installed it inside VMware and wanted to offer my review of the latest Windows Server OS, its features, and benefits. This will allow you to easily create test and development environments without having to use too many resources. Either way, the long list of features will go a long way to encourage system administrators to trying out the new Server OS. The related issues on the security of Windows Server 2008, such as Windows 2008 password recovery, therefore, still discussed heated recently.
Many vendors’ applications can only run in a 32-bit environment rather than on Windows Server 2012 in health care field, for instance. In Windows Server 2012, we can see some features are carried forward in Windows Server 2012. Besides, though the DNSSEC doesn’t work well in non-Windows environment in Windows Server 2008 R2, now, with a GUI, Microsoft develops it to fully interoperable. However, by now, there’re too many security flaws have been found in Windows Vista, which results to fewer and fewer Vista users.
If such an option exists and is disabled, enable it, boot the system and repeat the above commands. Secondly, when you close a VNC viewer window the guest domain continues to run allowing you to simply reconnect to carry on where you left off. Additionally, there are many new key security features that have made the server more secure.
And also, users tend to make comparison between the security performances of the two operating systems. What’s more, we can see that a network protector mode is designed for BitLocker in Windows Server 2008.
Closing an SDL window, however, immediately terminates the guest domainU system resulting in possible data loss. The interface offers the ability to perform common tasks faster, security enhancements, web server health information, delegation of administration, and more.
There are many password policies designed to protect Windows Server 2008 password security. With IIS 7.0, your access to diagnostic and troubleshooting information is much easier and quicker (Figure 2). By default, the password created by users need to meet the password complexity requirements, which make it much harder to be cracked. In Windows Server 2008, IT administrators have to physically input a password on each boot. Only thorough testing by IT system administrators will show just how good Windows Server 2008 will be. Meanwhile, the password should be changed within a limited time so that hackers have less time to crack the password. As a result, to make the remote administration of encrypted systems seems to be a hard job.
