The beauty of yoga nidra is in its capacity to increase our awareness to where we subconsciously manifest nervous system in our body, specifically within the neuromuscular system.
The benefits of yoga nidra for sleep are not just in it’s potency in inducing deep sleep, but also in its capacity to increase your self-awareness to how you habitually respond to, and physically manifest, stress and tension. I first came across the ancient yogic science of yoga nidra while staying in a yoga ashram in northern India, while I was traveling through south east Asia seeking yogic knowledge and wisdom. At first I did not see the potency of this form of meditation to help insomniacs, or anyone suffering from sleeping disorders, but this quickly become obvious. In fact, most people fall asleep; it takes an ardent and sincere meditator to remain awake beyond the threshold of sleep.
After returning to my native country I noticed many people complaining of sleeping disorders, or challenges falling asleep. I put together a yoga nidra for sleep recording, made it into a video and uploaded it to YouTube so I could more easily share it with my friends and family who were needing a way to fall asleep at night.
The feedback I have received from my audience on YouTube and Facebook inspired me to continue. The yoga nidra for sleep videos I initially released to YouTube were all completely full length and totally free. Now you can download all four of my most favored and reliable yoga nidra for sleep sessions for one low price!

In Yoga Nidra, you leave the Waking state, go through the Dreaming state, and into the Deep Sleep state, yet remain fully awake. Yoga Nidra is a practice that can take you to the next level; a relaxed body, fluid mind, and supercharged intuition. Yoga Nidra, translated as yogic sleep, is a five-stage process that begins with a body scan to engage one’s physicality. Relaxation exercises and pratyahara are used to prepare the mind and body for Yoga Nidra by balancing the right and left hemispheres of the brain and stimulating the subtle energies of our vital force, the prana. We engage in simple breathing exercises to release tension and trigger the nervous system to induce a state of parasympathetic activation. So we create pratyahara (sense withdrawal) and command control over the sensory mechanisms of the physical body, specifically through exercises which deal with the mapping of the brain. Pratyahara opens the gate to the contents of the subconscious and unconscious levels of mind. The science behind this stage is simply to make use of the principle of homunculus, or the walking sensation through the cerebral cortex.
The objective here is not only to enhance our ability to be aware and connected to our emotional responses, but also to work with the subtle body. Our aim at this stage is to use the interaction of polarized emotional experience through a type of word association. At this stage, we access and work with contents of the unconscious mind and samskaras which are our mental and emotional patterns, individual impressions, ideas, or actions. Here, guidance through a series of archetypal images or a guided visualization in form of a vivid journey will evoke responses in our relaxed mind. Yoga Nidra takes us through a magical process of releasing the physical body, quieting the brain waves, tapping into our emotional body, and gaining a higher intellect.

The yogi would use this technique to remain awake beyond the first threshold of physical and mental sleep, which is a great challenge but would allow for deep meditations.
While approaching the gravitational pull of sleep, just allow yourself to drift off into the peaceful depths of unconsciousness. The soothing tone of the narrator and the hypnotic effect of their voice, the relaxing music for falling asleep, as well as binaural beats to influence your mind to slow down to the delta brainwaves associated with deep sleep.
By becoming fully aware of how we carry stress, we can consciously and willfully release, let go and unwind – eventually identifying the underlying source and transcending it. This newfound awareness stays with you during your daily life, as well; greatly uplifting and enriching your quality of life.
What was immediately apparent to me about this meditation technique is that it was notably difficult to pass beyond the threshold of physical and mental sleep and remain awake.

Still to this day I am committed to regularly uploading free and complete yoga nidras and guided meditations to YouTube, however I am giving my audience the opportunity to purchase more in-depth training courses, and other yoga videos and audios, so that I can commit more of my time to producing these authentic and deeply rewarding yogic meditation techniques. It incorporates meditation on the breath, the balancing of emotional states, visualization, and self-healing.
Swami Rama has been quoted to say that Yoga Nidra is a practice of self mastery of the autonomic nervous system. For example, someone might want to manifest fearlessness, courage, inner peace, or fulfillment. The mapped stimulation through the brain relaxes the motor and sensory regions, thereby relaxing the body and the mind. We want to become mindful of the realms that lie beyond body and experience the pranic tide of breath without judgement.
We want to dissolve our attachment to emotional and conditional programming that lies hidden from conscious awareness in the subconscious mind.
Even a beginner can enter profoundly deep states of consciousness just the same as any experienced meditator. However, for someone looking for a fast and reliable way to induce sleep, this technique becomes a great boon! My immediate reaction was, ‘why not do yoga nidra and just not resist the urge to drift into unconsciousness upon putting the body and mind to sleep’? Setting a positive intention is another important step (which is called a sankalpa) and this gives the participant a specific purpose to the session. Through breathing techniques, we continue withdrawal from the external body and continue momentum of the inward journey.
I love my life, self inquiry, yoga, change, living my highest potential, facilitating others living their highest potential, precision of language, living consciously, purity of integrity, examining our raw emotions, re-examining.
In turn, this improves our overall physical health and leads to higher energy as well as fewer colds and infections of all types. My non-negotiables in life: practice yoga, let go of what I can't control, nourish self-connection, breath deeply, be productive yet calm, create. Rest also improves mental health, eliminating brain fog, insomnia, anxiety attacks, PTSD, and depression.
